Go-Live [Nov. 8th, 2009|09:22 pm]
[Tags|]
[mood | tired]

Today, my almost 1 year old project went live. That means it....... is now alive :x

Before this is was......... not alive yet (???) Haiyah, i dunno what u laymen call it lah.

OH OH TWISS TWISS!!!!! I KNOW LIAO....... today, my 1 year old project was launched.

There.

Yesterday did not want to go back office one. But when i found out wat happened, i felt it necessary to go back and lend support to Gym Colleague. Before we went live (i mean before launching), we did some clean up of our data so that when it was consolidated, it would be relatively free of errors. But to my horror, the system has to pull both the new and old data which meant we had to still manually clean the old data yesterday :(

Expecting things not to go well today, had to drag myself into office at 9.30am to chart our progress. Fortunately, it went smoothly today and could sneak out for 2 hours to lunch with the guys.

Did not get much sleep last night..... now so sleeeeeeeeeeeepy

Pick-me-ups [Nov. 5th, 2009|09:09 pm]
[mood | calm]

Working late tonight cos my project is going live this weekend.

Totally stressed out today cos we ran into a problem at 5pm and had to call an emergency meeting with numerous experts to solve the problem....... haha, just like Apollo 13 if you watched the movie.

And no, problem not solved. But told boss we shall thread on regardless as there is a work-around for the problem. And if that was not enough, i have to finish off another 2 important task tonight. Lost steam after completing the 1st task and searched desperately for a pick-me-up to tide me thru the 2nd task.

Fortunately, i found my pick-me-up...... a cold ribena and christmas carols.

Oh the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful, and since we've no place to go, let it snow let it snow let it snow.........

Complex Passwords [Nov. 4th, 2009|10:19 pm]
[Tags|]
[mood |geeky]

Wrote this article for my company newsletter. Thought that it may be useful for some of you

=== COMPLEX PASSWORDS ===
Cracking of a password means to break it by guessing what it is. Crackers do that in order to gain unauthorised access to data or transactions which they do not have legitimate access to.

With advanced technologies these days, crackers use automated tools to assist them in cracking passwords. Such tools already have dictionary words fed into them, and the cracker is additionally able to feed in personal information of a victim such as date of birth, NRIC number, phone numbers, address, car license plates and family members' names. The automated tools are then able to use a combination of these words and phrases to try cracking the victim's password(s).

Failing the above, the automated tool will then start a brute force attack which means it tries every possible combination of a password until the password is cracked. In other words, all passwords can be cracked. To prevent this, IT Department already configured our critical systems to lock out passwords after 6 unsuccessful tries.

What about for other systems that does not allow locking? How do we protect ourselves from password cracking?

First of all, we should never use dictionary words nor passwords which are easily guessed.

Passwords containing personal information such NRIC, date of birth, phone numbers etc should also be avoided.

Instead, we should always use complex passwords that employ a combination of upper and lower case alphabets, as well as numbers and special characters. These passwords are hard to crack, which in turn may discourage the cracker from investing too much time and effort to crack them.

The table below illustrates how difficult it is to crack a 8-character password:

Spoilers Please [Nov. 1st, 2009|08:01 pm]
[mood | curious]

Was watching the re-run of MediaCorp's Reunion Dinner on channel 8 this afternoon.

I can't catch next week's episodes, so can someone tell me what happened to Chen LiPing's hubby, Louis, after he jumped down? Did he die or did something miraculous happened?

The scene reminded me of an incident that happened to my friend's mum. They stayed on the highest floor, and one day, someone knocked on her front door. When she went to see who it was, the old lady jumped off the parapet to her death.

You're In Love by Wilson Philips [Oct. 23rd, 2009|09:42 am]
[mood | calm]

While in the office last night, i decided to listen to some of my forgotten tracks and came across this one. The chorus is SOOOOOOO SADDDDDDD.

Some Wilson Philips trivia, the trio are all daughters of The Beach Boys band.

"You're In Love" by Wilson Philips

Open the door and come in
I'm so glad to see you my friend
Don't know how long it has been
Having those feelings again.

And now I see that you're so happy
And ooh, it just sets me free, and I'd like to see
Us as good of friends, as we used to be

[Chorus:]
Aah, my love, Aah
You're in love, that's the way
It should be, 'cause I want you to be happy
You're in love, and I know
That you're not in love with me
Ooh it's enough for me to know
That you're in love, now I'll let you go
'Cause I know, that you're in love

Sometimes it's hard to believe
That you're never coming back to me
I've had this dream that you'd always be by my side
Oh I could have died.

But now I see that you're so happy
And ooh, it just sets me free, and I'd like to see
Us as good of friends, as we used to be

[Chorus]

I tried to find you but you were so far away
I was praying that fate would bring you back to me
Someday, someday, someday, someday... Ooh, you're in love

Ooh it's enough for me to know
That you're in love, now I'll let you go
'Cause I know that you're in love

Project Pangarap 2009 [Oct. 19th, 2009|07:46 pm]
[mood | hopeful]

OK, i shall now do my bit for charity.

This is Edmund's charity thingie.

Ahem ahem.

Project Pangarap, which means Project Dream, involves building houses for typhoon victims in the Philippines. 18 students from SMU will be flying over there to lend their labour to the construction of 20 new houses, library decoration and teaching english to kids.

Why they allow singaporeans to go teach english is beyond me lah........

Anyways, i think life has treated us well here in singapore, and i really cannot imagine being poor until i dun have a roof over my head. And these 18 students not only are going there to do manual labour, they need to raise funds to sponsor their trips as well. So i ask of you, if you like chocolates and can afford it monetarily and metabolically, please place an order today.

Procedure

1. The order form is in the link, please click to see what chocolates are on offer.

https://www.yousendit.com/download/Z01NT2pIT2JTRTd2Wmc9PQ

2. I will consolidate the order so leave a comment here and transfer the money to Posbank savings account 091-12347-9

3. Orders and payment need to be in by this Friday 5.30pm. I will take delivery of the chocolates next week and will arrange to meet up with you somewhere in town. If i do not have your contact number, please send it to me by private message.
